The naked flames danced gracefully around me as the pain flowed, through my veins. The grief and sorrow enveloped me and I descended into it without resistance. Coldplay strummed their beat as their melancholic lyrics rang so very true.

The candles began to die one by one. They had served their purpose for that brief moment in time and finally reached their destiny. The sands of time continued to slip on by. The merlot mixed with my blood and the bitterness ran through me.

Devastated by his beloved's betrayal, Om collapses both physically as well as emotionally and with that, begins his arduous battle for peace. Torn between love and anger, Om inadvertently starts to lose his grip on life as he knew it causing his world to spiral out of control.

Hoping to recover, Om turns to his closest friends, Arun and Mona. However, instead of gaining support, he bears witness to the trials which have beseiged their lives.

Like life, the three tales entwine sprinkled with humour, tragedy, perseverance and karmic retribution, and through Om, they bind together into a climactic conclusion.

AN EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK
Chapter 34

The Tir Na Nog pub at 5 Penn Plaza was my salvation for the night. I couldn’t go back to Sliver, it was temporarily disowned. Instead of trendy furniture, hottest music and the iconic aquarium, I’d make do with the wood laden tables, chairs, benches and the stench of beer.

Placing the sheets of paper on the slab, I slipped off my grey jacket and sat down on the bar stool.

“Om, my son, haven’t seen you in a long time, mate,” Paul snapped from the corner of the bar.

“How’s it going, mate? It certainly has been a long time.”

Paul was a tall, gruff man with an iron handshake and a hearty laugh. He had been pulling pints behind the wooden bar since anyone could remember.

“Caffrey’s, is it?” Paul knew the preferred poison of each of his regulars, even those who had been away.

“Please. I see you’ve got some new glasses, Paul?” I asked pointing at the thin silver framed instrument that sat on his disfigured nose.

“Aye,” he placed the frothy glass in front of me, “My eyes ya know and the missus, she’s been busting me nads. Says, I eye up all the totty in the pub and when I told her I’m flipping blind, she got me these buggers,” he laughed. “Only problem is, now I can see all the totty and I’m loving it!” He laughed louder this time, “Oye, you think the talent will think I’m more distinguished with these on?” He stood up straight and posed by placing his hands on his hips.

“Oh definitely, you’re a regular Brad Pitt.”

“Aw bollocks, that Pitt lad is a pussy!” he continued making his way to one of the regulars at the end of the bar, “Enjoy your pint.”

“Cheers,” I raised the glass.

Picking up the papers, I started to read the last article from the backup stash hoping it would keep my mind occupied. Monica’s deadline was around the corner and I hadn’t found a permanent cure for the crippling writer’s block I suffered. As I read through the old words about an Indian man’s turn-offs, my mind wandered in to thoughts of betrayal. Halfway through the pint, I dialled Mona’s number only to be diverted to her voicemail. I was struggling to keep it together and needed to talk to someone. Arun’s stupidity threw me into an emotional and mental whirlwind and I could once again sense myself slipping...

“You in a rush?” Paul returned as I downed the rest of the pint.

“Just thirsty Paul, just thirsty.”

“Yeah, I’ve seen that kind of thirst. What his name?” he winked.

“I still like women, Paul.”

“Ahh well, you’ve been away for a while, son, you never know,” he chuckled.

“Don’t you have a sheep to shag or something?”

“That’s the Welsh you twat, I’m Scottish!”

“Well, you’re all sheep shaggers to me,” I responded quickly.

The Journey of Om eBook Chandru Bhojwani

The usual fictional romance novel is anything but novel, usually framed around a female jilted lover and the glorified process she takes post break up, indulging in blind dates, shopping sprees, and pseudo-therapy- junk- food- binge sessions with her girl friends, who undoubtedly agree that she was completely blame free, and that the one who once could make her smile so bright she radiated, is now the scum that festers on top of bacteria. Although read by many, these books are far from earning any literary awards and are often referred to as 'chic-lets". I was pleasantly surprised within the first few pages of The Journey of Om to find out the" jilted lover" was male, and every page thereafter was full of wit, voice, and imagery. Chandru Bhojwani successfully took the predictable and trite harlequin love story and crafted a fine work of literature.

Many escape from reality and turn to books and movies that portray a world where at pivotal moments, the music will slowly begin, and the characters are off in a carefree universe full of singing and dancing. The Journey of Om provides a story to surely warm even the coldest hearts and allow readers to temporarily case aside his or her own personal burdens and embark on a journey with Om and Company.

The Journey of Om is not a fairytale; in fact it depicts the workings of the human heart and the cyclical nature of life and karma quite accurately. The story focuses on Om, an Indian writer in NYC, who is heartbroken upon learning that the love of his life has been unfaithful to him. His "journey" through this emotional time, is far from the Hollywood, or rather, Bollywood glamour. In fact, Bhojwani does anything but glorify the healing process. Om, like everyone who has been hurt by love, turns to his nearest and dearest friends, Arun and Mona in his time of emotional need, who tirelessly try to cheer him up daily, yet their lives do not halt in the wake of Om's heartache. While feeling sad and depressed over the loss of love, Om must smile at the thought of Mona, his long-time best friend and namesake cousin, finding her soul mate. Being the victim of adultery, Om is conflicted when his partner in crime, Arun, commits an intoxicated indiscretion himself. Bhojwani does not simply create a story where we can relate to the main character, "the jilted lover" but expands the plot to include the joy, sorrow, and complications of those in Om's life, and how although acutely aware of Om's personal emotional state, still rely on his support and friendship as well.

To describe The Journey of Om simply as a love story, or romance novel would not do justice to its literary brilliance. Bhojwani incorporates subtle references to the South Asian culture, adding an extra element of uniqueness and potentially paves a path infusing East Indian culture into the Western World, striking a clear and poignant balance between fantasy and reality. The Journey of Om is a must read page -turner not only for the young East Indian adult population, but for all.

The Journey of Om eBook Chandru Bhojwani Reviews

Where do you slot a book like `The Journey Of Om'? It's all about love, the falling in part, and the falling out part and yet it's not exactly a love story. It's about three friends who stick together through the highs and lows of their often-tumultuous lives and yet it's not a book that is just about friendship. It's about Desis living out their lives as it happens in the expatriate locations of America and Hong Kong and yet it's not all about the foreign-born confused Desi struggling to come to terms with their `Indian'-ness.

The story that Chandru Bhojwani weaves in `The journey of Om' is all that and much, more. The story begins as the title character Om finds himself being cheated on by Preeti, the love of his life. What ensues is Om's journey to climb out of the abyss he descends into with this betrayal. The story tracks his journey of self-discovery as he tries to regain emotional stability. To help him come to terms with his loss, Om turns to two of his closest friends, Arun and Mona. What he doesn't count on, however, is how quickly the role of being a supportive friend is reversed.

The writing is simple and not overly flowery. The narrative switches from the past to the present and back many a time, yet it does not spoil the pace. Om is well fleshed out and the reader gets to know him from the multiple perspectives of him and his friends. The reader sympathizes with him and then flinches at his hypersensitivity. Even then, Om remains a very real character that one can relate to. Of the supporting characters, Mona's story is well told. One wishes that Jim had been given a little more space in the book as somehow it is hard to reconcile his character's actions with his personality as described. Monica, while a thoroughly enjoyable character, is a little too stereotypical for me. Though her dialogues are top-notch, she is everything that you would expect a cutthroat publishing executive or a magazine editor to be. The author's characterization of the Sindhi community in Hong Kong is a little too dark and harsh for my taste. I would have preferred a shades of grey .

The most inspired pieces of writing in `The journey of Om' are the columns that Om writes for the magazine. Carrie Bradshaw-esque in style, and with a very male take on the opposite gender, relationships and even the foibles of the NRI community. The column on `Aunties' is one that many of us would be able to relate to. Without giving away too much of the plot, the one thing I can reveal about the conclusion is that it is an open one. Now though I generally like books to have a resolution, tied up neatly with a bow, I cannot see the ending of `The Journey of Om' in any other way but this. After all, in the journey of life there are no fixed destinations or picture-perfect endings and this is what the conclusion reflects.

Born in Nigeria and brought up between Nigeria, UK and India, Chandru Bhojwani has told this NRI tale with aplomb. The book betrays none of the awkwardness that you might expect from a first time writer. And while `The Journey of Om' might not make it's way to your well-thumbed favourites just yet, the author will certainly make it to your `Indian authors to watch out for' list.

The Journey Of Om (Cedar books / Pustak Mahal) is available in all leading bookstores and from the publisher's site.
